A tropical depression formed over the Atlantic southeast of Charleston, prompting tropical storm watches south to the Georgia-Florida state line.

The storm, which forecasters said could become Tropical Storm Gaston, was expected to come ashore in the Carolinas late today.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Frances gained strength and became a major hurricane with 115 mph winds far out in the Atlantic.
