A powerful rainstorm triggered landslides and flash floods that killed nearly 340 people in the eastern Philippines, officials said Tuesday, and rescuers raced to help people stranded in three coastal towns.

At least 150 people were missing and feared dead after Tuesday’s powerful storm washed away bridges and roads. Helicopter crews struggled to find landing places and dropped food to people huddled on rooftops.

Forecasters said a typhoon circling off the Pacific coast could hit the battered area.

Mayor Arsenio Ramallosa of Real town in Quezon province said 114 people were killed and 150 were missing after a landslide hit a shelter.
