Morality and the Profit Motive Sometimes Clash

Share

Re “The Invisible Hand Holds the Remote,” Commentary, Nov. 30: Robert Scheer perfectly encapsulated the crux of the “morality” problem in America today and in terms even conservatives would have to acknowledge. The profit motive that drives America’s capitalist civilization is indeed an amoral beast slouching toward Bethlehem.

Yet to admit this is to undermine everything that makes our society what it is. Until we address that fact, we will keep barreling along, producing all manner of moral, artistic and environmental pollution, as long as it makes a buck. Bravo, Mr. Scheer.

No, Mr. Scheer, Jesus would not be watching PBS or Bill O’Reilly, but rather C-SPAN.
