Times Staff Writer

Ed Orgeron, USC’s defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, spoke with Mississippi officials Tuesday and is expected to interview for the school’s head coaching position in the next few days.

“I expect to interview with Ole Miss by the end of the week,” Orgeron said.

Mississippi fired David Cutcliffe last week after a 4-7 season.

Orgeron, 43, is a Louisiana native. He turned down an offer to join Dennis Erickson’s staff with the San Francisco 49ers after USC’s 2002 season and was given the title of assistant head coach.

USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is scheduled to interview today for the head coaching position at Stanford.

USC defensive lineman Mike Patterson and punt returner Reggie Bush were selected to the Sporting News All-American team.

It is the first such honor for Patterson, who has a team-best 16 tackles for losses, including six sacks. He had four tackles, two for losses, in top-ranked USC’s victory over UCLA on Saturday.

“It’s very fitting recognition for a guy who had a fantastic career and a great senior year,” Coach Pete Carroll said. “That was never more evident than in our last game against UCLA.”

Last week, Bush was selected All-American by the American Football Coaches Assn.

Bush, quarterback Matt Leinart and linebacker Matt Grootegoed depart today for Orlando, Fla., where they will take part in the Home Depot College Football Awards show that will be broadcast Thursday.

Leinart and defensive lineman Shaun Cody were selected to the Sporting News’ second team. Cody also is a finalist for the Lombardi Award. He is in Houston, where the winner will be announced tonight.
