Several days of heavy rain have pushed the Tennessee River out of its banks, flooding some homes, officials said Wednesday.

The flooding was so extensive that a holiday boat parade was delayed until after Christmas.

The Stars on the River Christmas boat parade at Huntsville’s Ditto Landing, set for Saturday, was postponed until Jan. 8 because roads leading to the marina were flooded, officials said.

Chris Reed, a spokesman for the Emergency Management Agency in Madison County, warned that more rains could worsen the flooding: “The ground is already so saturated, it doesn’t take as much rain to cause a problem.”

Some Tennessee Valley Authority rain gauges in the Huntsville area recorded as much as seven inches over the last two days and several more inches of rain were forecast for today.
