From Times Wire Reports

A court convicted six prison guards of torture that led to the death of a Chinese businessman in 2003, a case that forced authorities to acknowledge torture in the prison system.

The guards in Rio de Janeiro’s Ary Franco prison were sentenced to terms up to the maximum of 18 years. Three inmates who helped torture Chinese businessman Chan Kim Chang received 13 years each.

Chan, 46, was arrested for trying to leave Brazil with $30,000 in cash he had not declared.

He was beaten into a coma at the prison and died days later.

Prison authorities initially said Chan injured himself.
