Villagers Battle Police After Mass Arrests

From Times Wire Reports

Hundreds of villagers in the Indian-held part of Kashmir waged street battles with police after 90 people were arrested and charged with torching an army bus and an Islamic seminary.

Protesters poured into the streets of Mattan, 40 miles south of Srinagar, to demonstrate against last week’s arrests for the fire in a nearby village. No one was injured in the blaze.

It was unclear why the bus and the seminary were burned -- or why so many people from Mattan, a Muslim village, were suspected in the arson.
