China and the West

The Dec. 16 editorial, “Not Ready for Mickey Mao,” seems to overlook the historical context of China’s relationship with the West. Much of this history consists of violent economic exploitation, forcing opium on Chinese markets and carving up the country into spheres of foreign domination.

We should be aware that amusement at the sensitivities of other countries can easily take on a tone of arrogance.
