From Times Wire Reports

Chinese police have detained a veteran dissident writer in a crackdown on independent intellectuals, a U.S.-based labor rights group said.

Yang Tianshui was taken away by police Friday in the eastern city of Hangzhou, China Labor Watch said.

Yang is at least the fourth dissident Chinese writer detained this month in what appears to be an official effort to tighten control over public discussion of government and politics. He spent 10 years in prison for criticizing the bloody 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen Square pro- democracy protests.
