Samuel Roseberry, 106; Lied About His Age to Serve in World War I
Samuel Roseberry, 106, who lied about his age in 1917 so he could join the U.S. Army and take part in World War I, died Dec. 21 in Anderson, Ind., after a long illness.
Born July 7, 1898, in Deputy, Ind., Roseberry was about two years shy of 21 -- the legal age for an Army recruit at the time -- when he lied about his age to join up.
Roseberry served as a mechanic behind the front lines in France during the war. He got to see Paris in 1918.
After the war, he returned to Indiana and ran a grocery store for four decades, retiring in 1962.
