“Reefer Madness!” -- the L.A. hit stage musical based loosely on the cult propaganda film of the 1930s -- has been greenlighted by Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt to be made into a film. Production is scheduled to begin in April; no airdate has yet been set.

The musical, which earned strong critical acclaim for its off-Broadway run in 2001, played in Los Angeles in 1999-2000.

Reuniting the stage version’s creative team, the Showtime Original Picture film will be directed by Andy Fickman and written by Kevin Murphy (book and lyrics) and Dan Studney (book and music).

“We are very excited about this musical, which I would describe as a cross between ‘Grease’ and ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ ” Greenblatt said.
