A New Year for Eurosilver

Share

Eurosilver, a son of Unbridled’s Song who some believed was the best 2-year-old in the country in 2003, will make his 3-year-old debut in today’s third race at Gulfstream Park.

Assuming, of course, they race at the Florida track. Racing was canceled after only two races Sunday and the entire card was wiped out Monday because of unsafe track conditions. Heavy rain fell at Gulfstream on Saturday and jockeys refused to ride, saying the track was uneven in spots.

If the show does go on this afternoon, Eurosilver will be heavily favored against five opponents in the $36,000 allowance at seven furlongs.

Trained by Nick Zito for Buckram Oak Farm, the dark bay colt hasn’t been out since his impressive win in the Lanes End Futurity at Keeneland on Oct. 4. He won by nearly five lengths at 11-1. It was his second victory in three starts, the other coming when he beat maidens by 5 3/4 lengths Sept. 1 at Saratoga.

Javier Castellano, who was aboard for Eurosilver’s two wins, has the mount again against a field that includes All True, Tenace, Seneca Summer (who finished last in the Holy Bull on Jan. 17 after winning three of five starts in Oklahoma and Texas), Hitthegroundrunnin and Mr. Piano Man.

Race of the day: Mambo Dancer, who won half of his 10 starts in his native Chile, will make his U.S. debut for trainer Laura De Seroux in today’s sixth, a $56,000 allowance at one mile, at Santa Anita. Mike Smith will ride the 5-year-old gelding, who hasn’t raced since winning a $5,000 handicap at Hipodromo on July 19.

One for the road: Miz Lynne Kelly is on top of her game right now and she steps up three levels in search of her fifth consecutive win in today’s ninth at Gulfstream Park. Roberto Alvarado Jr. will ride for trainer Alan Seewald in the $18,000 claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs. The 5-year-old Langfuhr mare has won four of five since being claimed for $20,000 by Seewald last summer at Monmouth Park.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the sixth keying The Student on top with Snorter, Mambo Dancer and Atouratoura in the two hole and all in the third spot.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/93. Money: Previous day/meet total: $17.60/$517.40. Total money bet: $498.
