A Honduran court has convicted a legislator of drug trafficking for the first time in the country’s history.

Armando Avila Panchame, a deputy from the ruling party, faces 15 to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced next week, a Supreme Court official said. Avila Panchame has said he plans to appeal.

The legislator was arrested in July while driving. Prosecutors said he was on his way to pick up a shipment of cocaine bound for the United States from Colombia.
