U.S. to Assess Security at Its Embassy in Haiti

Washington will dispatch a small military team to Haiti to assess whether the U.S. Embassy is adequately protected amid political violence, defense officials said. The decision came as the State Department urged U.S. citizens to leave and evacuated nonessential personnel.
The U.S. said it was open to the idea of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s stepping down to defuse the crisis.
In Gonaives, a gang including ex-soldiers led by Buter Metayer claimed to have formed the independent country of Artibonite, the name for the surrounding region. They drove police out of the city this month.
