A U.S. anti-terror team arrived over the weekend in Mauritania, said Deputy Undersecretary of State Pamela Bridge- water. The small team will be followed soon by U.S. Army experts and defense contractors under a $100-million Bush administration program for Mauritania, Mali, Chad and Niger.

The U.S. Pan-Sahel Initiative will provide 60 days of training to military units in the four nations, another U.S. official said. The initiative will provide SUVs, radios and uniforms for border patrols. U.S. troops will do the work in Mauritania and Mali; contractors of Los Angeles-based Pacific Architects & Engineers will do it in Chad and Niger.
