Some residents in upstate New York were measuring the snow in feet rather than inches Friday after lake-effect storms buried communities along Lake Ontario’s eastern shore.

The highest official total came from Parish, 30 miles north of Syracuse, where 69 inches -- about 6 feet -- fell from Wednesday afternoon to midday Friday.

In Fulton, about 2 feet piled up during a five-hour span Thursday morning. The storm left a total of about 2 1/2 feet in Fulton -- on top of more than 3 feet that fell a week ago.

“This is about as deep as I can remember,” said Paul Cardinali, a retired science teacher who’s measured the snowfall in Fulton since 1972.

“It’s not a good place to be if you’re claustrophobic,” he added. “The snowbanks are so high in some places, it’s like you’re walking in a tunnel.”

A state of emergency remained in effect Friday for all of Oswego County. Officials advised against unnecessary travel.

The National Weather Service said squalls would end by Sunday, with weather improving next week.
