Judge Allows U.S. Suit Over Safer Cigarettes

The federal judge overseeing a $280-billion U.S. racketeering suit against the tobacco industry sided with the government over charges that companies had tried to avoid developing safer cigarettes.
U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler rejected a tobacco industry request that she dismiss those government claims, saying there were many disputes over the facts that could be resolved only at the trial.
