Suffering for full carbon frame sets

“A Crash Course in Dodging Rebels and Fate” (July 20) reads like an Olympic moment -- poor kids overcome great obstacles through suffering. Which is believable. What’s odd is that Yeferson Vargas and Emerson Bernal are using arguably the highest-end racing bikes and clothes on the market. So how do we go from “race barefoot on borrowed bike in a wool jumper” to full carbon frameset on Campy Record 10 and custom wheel set in Gore-Tex and carbon shoes?
