Karen Southwick, 53; Wrote of the Rise and Fall of Silicon Valley

Karen Southwick, a journalist and author who chronicled the boom and bust of Silicon Valley, died of cancer Sunday at her home in San Francisco. She was 53.

During her 25-year career in journalism, Southwick worked as a business reporter and editor at newspapers, magazines and online publications, including the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, the San Francisco Chronicle, Upside magazine, Forbes ASAP and, until shortly before she died, CNET News.com.

She wrote five books about business and technology, including “Everyone Else Must Fail: The Unvarnished Truth About Oracle and Larry Ellison,” published last year. She received her degrees from Brigham Young University and UC Berkeley.
