Cookin’ at the Cookery: The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter: Marion J. Caffey’s often formulaic script is structured around blues sensation Hunter’s comeback at a Greenwich Village nightclub in 1977 at age 82, with flashbacks to follow. Ann Duquesnay and Montego Glover toss the role of Hunter back and forth and give scalding performances. Glover plays Hunter into her 50s, while Duquesnay, who won a Tony for “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk,” plays her in her older years. Caffey deserves credit for directing two live-wire performances and for his efficient choreography.

Ends Sunday at the Brentwood Theatre, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., Building 211, West Los Angeles (310) 208-5454
