U.S. Soldier Killed in Attack in Afghanistan
An American soldier was killed and two were injured Monday by a bomb that exploded near their Humvee in southern Afghanistan, a military spokeswoman said.
Lt. Col. Michele DeWerth said all three were flown to a U.S. military base in the southern city of Kandahar after the attack near Deh Rawood, in Oruzgan province, about 250 miles southwest of Kabul, the capital.
In a separate incident, American warplanes pounded insurgents who fled to caves in southern Afghanistan after a gun battle with U.S. troops, the military said Monday.
The planes struck early Sunday near Tirin Kot, a town also about 250 miles southwest of Kabul, Lt. Col. Tucker Mansager said.
He said no U.S. soldiers were hurt, and he could provide no information on casualties among the militants.
