Hedging Apologies on the Iraq War

Share

Re “A ‘Sorry’ State of Affairs,” Opinion, June 6: Conservative pundits disingenuously apologize for being wrong about messy details of the Iraq invasion (like not finding weapons of mass destruction) but insist they are right about “the war itself,” based on the merits of liberation and democratization never mentioned when Congress OKd the resolution letting President Bush invade. Given this inordinate devotion to Bush (and not to the facts), it seems to me that any ban against same-sex marriage should begin (and end) with right-wing pundits who are wedded to Bush till death do them part.

I disagree with the June 8 letter on the June 5 front-page photo of two dead American soldiers. That photo shocked me once again into the reality that we did not and have not won this idiotic war. Because we have lost fewer than 1,000 troops, Americans tend to feel that we can persevere -- for the good of what? “Freedom”? “Fighting evildoers”? As of yet, it seems we see only Iraqi troops strewn across the page, which makes us numb to our great loss: our precious 800-plus troops deceased. Thank you for a reality check.
