Gunmen killed at least 34 ranch workers in Colombia’s deadliest violence in a year, officials said. The workers were sleeping at the ranch near the town of La Gabarra before the gunmen tied them up with hammock ropes and shot them with automatic weapons, Mayor Taiz Ortega said.

Ortega said that the motive was not immediately known but that the attack appeared to be the work of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels. She said the victims apparently worked in coca fields.
