UCI Chief to Receive Einstein Award

Just days after announcing that he would step down as chancellor of UC Irvine in anticipation of being named president of the National Academy of Sciences, Ralph J. Cicerone has received another honor: the Albert Einstein World Award of Science.

“I am honored to win such an award that bears Albert Einstein’s name,” said Cicerone, 61, an acclaimed atmospheric scientist regarded as a leading expert on global warming. “I believe this recognition reflects well not only on the important work being done in Earth system science at UCI but also on the excellent research environment on our campus.”

The award -- a diploma, medal and $10,000 given each year by the World Cultural Council for research efforts that “have brought true benefit and well being to mankind” -- will be bestowed during a ceremony in Belgium in November.

Cicerone’s research in recent years has centered on understanding the chemistry of the ozone layer and the surface sources of trace gases that contribute to the global greenhouse effect.
