A Familiar Road in the Driver’s License Issue

Share

Re “Driver’s License Bill Gains,” June 16: Here we go again with renewed legislative fervor to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. I’ve heard enough arguments on both sides of the issue and I’m still convinced that giving illegal immigrants a license to drive is a bad idea. I’ve got this warped sense of right and wrong that tells me that once I hear the word “illegal,” I’ve heard enough.

That said, I do have one suggestion. If you’re illegal and you do want the privilege of driving in the United States, can’t we at least legislate that you pass the written test in English?

Why are we still arguing over a compromise bill for issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants? We have laws against having illegals in our country, so why should we even consider giving more benefits to those already breaking the law?

We should not even be talking about terrorism with respect to this policy. It seems to me we are working at the wrong end of the horse. We should be working to force those who want to enter our country to do so in accordance with our existing laws; then they can work and apply for driver’s licenses maybe from the front end of the horse.

Re “Many New Jobs Going to Noncitizens,” June 16: With 15 million Americans looking for full-time work, it is sickening to learn that three out of 10 jobs are going to noncitizens. I don’t know about other Americans, but I am outraged!
