The former fire chief of Denver has been selected to head the city’s Fire Department.

Roderick Juniel, 54, served as Denver’s chief from March 2001 until last year, when the city’s new mayor replaced several officials. Juniel spent nearly 30 years with the Denver department and was its first black chief, officials said.

In Denver, Juniel led 950 firefighters and oversaw a $100-million operating budget.
