Boxing

Mike Tyson will have to fight -- and fight often -- to get out of debt, despite the prospect of a $14-million payment from Don King to settle his claims against the promoter.

Tyson will drop his $100-million suit against King in exchange for the payment, but the former heavyweight champion will see none of the money. It will go toward paying about $38.4 million Tyson owes to various creditors, the Internal Revenue Service and his ex-wife, Monica.

To pay off the rest, Tyson’s attorneys have laid out a plan in federal bankruptcy court in New York under which Tyson will fight seven times over the next three years.

“We are somewhat concerned because all that basketball causes a lot of wear and tear and prevents you from being fresh at the start of the season,” Charlotte Coach and General Manager Bernie Bickerstaff said.

Two-time Olympic medalist Marty Nothstein and returning Olympian Erin Mirabella were among the seven riders nominated by USA Cycling to compete in the Athens Games.

Auto Racing

Helio Castroneves broke the track record with a 171.202-mph lap at Richmond, Va., International Raceway to win the pole for today’s SunTrust Indy Challenge.

Officials say car and track owner Roger Penske is expected to try to broker a deal between Champ Car and the Indy Racing League in an attempt to unify the American open-wheel racing circuit.

Massachusetts agreed to suspend football Coach Don Brown for the first three games and issued a public apology to Atlantic 10 Conference rival Northeastern for recruiting and hiring him away, all part of a settlement ending a lawsuit.

Kathleen Salyers, who is at the center of the lawsuit that led to the firing of Jim O’Brien as Ohio State basketball coach, said that assistant Paul Biancardi directed her to ask professors to change grades for former player Boban Savovic, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight also said that he was not being considered as a replacement for O’Brien.

Although Missouri had no legal obligation to pay anything to besieged former basketball assistants Tony Harvey and Lane Odom, the university agreed to settlements of more than $136,000 in exchange for their pledges to never sue, according to documents obtained by Associated Press.

The assistants are at the center of alleged NCAA violations in the program.

Gerard Gallant was appointed coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, nearly six months after he took over on an interim basis.
