Scott Stays Hot to Take a Six-Stroke Advantage

Adam Scott took a six-stroke lead in the Booz Allen Classic at Potomac, Md., shooting a four-under-par 67 in windy conditions Saturday.

The 23-year-old Australian had an 18-under 195 total to match the 54-hole TPC at Avenel record set by Hal Sutton in 1991.

Scott also tied the lowest 54-hole total on the PGA Tour this year. Phil Mickelson had a 195 total in the Bob Hope Classic, and David Toms did the same in the St. Jude Classic.

Olin Browne (71) was second at 12 under, and Arron Oberholser (68) and Charles Howell III (72) were 11 under.

Defending champion Michelle Wie won two matches to advance to the final of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Championship at Williamsburg, Va.

The 14-year-old sensation, who became the youngest Publinx winner a year ago, beat Jenna Pearson, 5 and 4, in the quarterfinals and outlasted Angela Park of Torrance, 2 and 1, in the semifinals.

Wie will play Ya-Ni Tseng of Taiwan, who beat In-Bee Park, 1-up in the other semifinal.

Kim Saiki remained on course for her first victory in 13 years on the LPGA Tour, shooting a four-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Rosie Jones in the Rochester LPGA at Pittsford, N.Y.

Saiki, who has four career runner-up finishes, had a 13-under 203 total. Jones, looking for her third victory in seven years on the Locust Hill course, shot a 67.

Candie Kung (73) was five strokes back at eight under, and Annika Sorenstam (71) topped a four-player group at seven under.

Tom Purtzer shot a five-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead over Walter Hall and John Jacobs into the final round of the Champions Tour Bank of America Championship at Concord, Mass.

Purtzer had an 11-under 133 total on the Nashawtuc Country Club course. Jacobs shot a 67 and Hall had a 68. Tom Kite (69), Jerry Pate (68) and John Harris (70) were three back at eight under.

Auto Racing

Ron Hornaday Jr. won the Alan Kulwicki 250 at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., taking the lead with seven laps to go after rallying from a lap down.

Hornaday passed Shane Hmiel on the inside, ending Hmiel’s chance for his first Busch Series victory.

In all, eight racers led the 250-lap event -- run under the lights for the first time -- on the 1.032-mile track.

Dan Wheldon came from the back of the pack and held off Helio Castroneves in a one-lap sprint to the finish to win the accident-plagued SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond, Va.

Wheldon, who started 20th, led Vitor Meira and Castroneves coming out of a caution period with a lap remaining and managed to outsprint Castroneves in the final turn at Richmond International Raceway.

IRL officials later disallowed Castroneves’ pass of Meira because the track lights didn’t change from yellow to green in the final lap. Meira finished second in the official results and Castroneves was third.

Corona’s Russell White earned his second win of the season as he held off Tony and James Bruncati to win the 75-lap Lucas Oil Super Late Model series feature at Irwindale Speedway in front of about 3,000.

In the 50-lap West Coast Pro Truck series feature, Aaron Staudinger earned his second win of the season by easily holding off Chris Johnson and Sean Bennett.

In the 50-lap NAPA Auto Parts Super Truck series feature, Pat Mintey Jr. overtook Billy Helgeson just past the halfway mark and held him off for the win.

Roger Penske would prefer one American open-wheel racing circuit and might try to broker a deal between Champ Car and the Indy Racing League.

Penske met this week with the principal owners of Champ Car, and IRL officials expect him to talk to IRL president Tony George. No formal meeting about a reunification has been scheduled.

Miscellany

Dave Lewis signed a one-year contract to return as coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Lewis’ contract expired after the Red Wings were eliminated by Western Conference champion Calgary in the second round of the playoffs.

Sam Mitchell was still on the job as an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats amid reports that he had been chosen to be the head coach of the Toronto Raptors.

A Charlotte team spokesman said only that the Bobcats had given the Raptors permission to speak to Mitchell.

The Houston Texans signed first-round pick Jason Babin, a linebacker from Western Michigan.
