From Times Wire Reports

A British Home Office spokeswoman said nearly 4,000 people had applied to join MI5, the domestic intelligence service, since the government announced last week that it would recruit more secret agents to fight terrorism.

Only about one in 100 applicants could expect to make it through the rigorous process.

The agency, which employs about 1,900 people, is looking to recruit 300 a year at salaries starting around $37,000.
