Howard Against Law to Let Gay Couples Adopt
Prime Minister John Howard condemned Australia’s first law allowing gay couples to adopt children, and his government is considering whether to overturn the state law.
“I’m against gay adoption, just as I’m against gay marriage,” he said. “There are certain benchmark institutions and arrangements in our society that you don’t muck around with.”
The Australian Capital Territory -- which administers the capital, Canberra -- adopted a bill of rights that allows gay couples to adopt. Howard is considering using rarely exercised powers to overturn the law.
