U.S. Soldier Killed, Another Wounded by Bomb in Iraq

An American soldier was killed Tuesday morning when a roadside bomb exploded while his convoy was passing by, the U.S. military said.

The soldier was the first member of the 1st Infantry Division, which is replacing the 4th Infantry Division, to die in Iraq, Maj. Debra Stewart said.

The soldier was killed when the Humvee he was riding in was struck in Balad Ruz, east of Baqubah.

A second soldier was wounded.

The names of both were withheld pending notification of their families.

The latest death brings to 553 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the Iraq war began on March 20 last year.

Meanwhile, officials at Camp Pendleton announced Tuesday that a Marine private died Monday of a noncombat gunshot wound at a Kuwait staging area being used by the 1st Marine Division for forces moving into Iraq.

The death of Pfc. Matthew G. Milczark, 18, of Kettle River, Minn., is under investigation.
