Rebel Region Faces Economic Blockade
Georgia’s military was on alert after the country’s president was blocked from entering its restive Black Sea province of Adzharia.
President Mikheil Saakashvili, a U.S.-trained lawyer elected after leading street protests that toppled veteran leader Eduard A. Shevardnadze, threatened an economic blockade after twice being blocked from entering the province. The dispute has worsened already difficult relations between the former Soviet republic and Russia, a patron of Adzharia, which warned Saakashvili not to resort to force.
