SAN JOSE

For the first time since it was founded more than a century ago, the San Jose Elks lodge has picked a woman as its leader.

Margaret Hobbs, a retired insurance agent who founded a medical claims company, was to be inaugurated Saturday night as the “exalted ruler” of the chapter, which was founded in 1899 and has 1,024 members. The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks began accepting women in 1995, but the San Jose lodge remains about 96% male, with about 40 women.
