The Mayor’s Office of Housing should take control of unused or underutilized city property to build housing for the homeless, a Board of Supervisors committee has concluded.

According to the Surplus City Property Ordinance, which the board passed in 2002, city departments must identify property that isn’t being used or is underutilized.

The ordinance requires any suitable land to be used for housing the homeless. And property deemed unsuitable for development may be sold, with the proceeds going toward affordable housing.

The 40 properties presented to the committee Wednesday are scattered throughout the city.
