Considering ‘Nightline’ roll call’s merits

Share

Chris WALLACE said he was “offended” by the reading of the more than 700 names by “Nightline” anchor Ted Koppel without putting them into the greater context of what has happened in Iraq (“Fox Anchor Criticizes ‘Nightline,’ ” by Elizabeth Jensen, May 6). He then said his show will fill in the gaps this weekend with its own list.

Koppel’s list lasted his entire show. Wallace’s list will last ... five minutes! An appropriate amount of time considering the segment’s title: “What We’ve Accomplished.”

I watched the “Nightline” program and wished that each photo was shown for more than a few seconds. It was difficult to focus on each person so quickly, but it was a profound experience.

It was surprising, even shocking to see the women’s photos, which appeared from time to time, and really sad to know that each person shown will not be able to continue their lives, enjoy their families, their spouses and children nor develop their skills and maybe even make other special contributions later in life. It made me more determined than ever to work with others to see that international problems are solved by diplomacy, international law and institutions rather than war.
