Jones Lifts the Twins
Jacque Jones just wanted to advance the runner when he hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run in the ninth inning at Toronto.
That shot lifted Minnesota to a 9-5 victory over the Blue Jays on Monday night. Lew Ford and Torii Hunter also homered for the Twins, who have won six of seven.
After Hunter led off the ninth with a double, Jones hit a 1-and-1 pitch from Mike Nakamura (0-2). Jones’ seventh homer gave the Twins a 7-5 lead.
“I just wanted to get Torii over, to be honest,” Jones said. “You never hit homers when you try to. It was a short, quick swing.”
Michael Cuddyer later scored on catcher Kevin Cash’s error, and Cristian Guzman added a run-scoring single to make it 9-5.
Minnesota left fielder Shannon Stewart left in the ninth inning because of an injured left foot.
Cleveland 7, Chicago 2 -- Victor Martinez had three more runs batted in, Cliff Lee stayed unbeaten and the Indians won their fifth in a row at Cleveland.
In 13 starts since Martinez was moved into the cleanup spot, the switch-hitting catcher is batting .333 (18 for 54) with 21 RBIs.
Lee (5-0) became the first Cleveland starter with a 5-0 record since Dennis Martinez’s 9-0 mark in 1995.
