Davenport Loses Strasbourg Final

Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport was upset in the final of the Strasbourg Open in France on Saturday by Claudine Schaul, who is ranked 66th and won her first WTA Tour title.

Schaul won, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, beating a player who is ranked No. 4 and is a three-time Grand Slam tournament champion.

On her way to the final of the clay-court tuneup for the French Open, she beat three seeded players -- No. 5 Tina Pisnik, No. 2 Ai Sugiyama and No. 4 Emilie Loit.

“It’s a dream to win a WTA tournament,” Schaul said. “I was so emotional at match point that I double-faulted several times and lost that game.”

The French Open starts Monday, and Schaul plays former champion Mary Pierce in the first round. Davenport, seeded fifth, plays Virginie Pichet.

Martina Navratilova enjoyed a strong tuneup for the French Open, teaming with Lisa Raymond to win the doubles title at the Vienna Grand Prix. The top-seeded team beat second-seeded Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs, 6-2, 7-5.

Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi won the singles title of the clay-court tournament, defeating Alicia Molik, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Top-seeded Dominik Hrbaty was upset by qualifier Santiago Ventura, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, in the final of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco.... Chile defeated Australia, 2-1, to win the World Team Cup in Duesseldorf, Germany. It’s the first time a country won consecutive titles in the event since the United States in 1984-85.

Golf

Chad Campbell became the third golfer in two years to tie the Colonial course record and shared the third-round lead after Brian Gay couldn’t sustain his fast start.

Campbell shot a nine-under-par 61 despite two bogeys and winds of 20-25 mph at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. He’s at eight-under 202.

Gay was on a record run of his own with six birdies in a seven-hole stretch. He was eight-under through 12 holes. But he had bogeys on three of his last five holes. He finished with a 65 and a share of the lead with Campbell and Steve Flesch (67).

Sherri Steinhauer capped a five-under 66 with an eagle three to tie Becky Morgan for the lead after three rounds of the Sybase Classic in New Rochelle, N.Y.

They are at 10-under 203, three shots in front of Young-A Yang (71) and Grace Park (71).

Steinhauer hit a three-wood from 245 yards to five feet and made the putt to tie Morgan, the second-round leader who had a one-over 71.

Bobby Walzel, playing in a tournament for the first time since October, shot a five-under 66 to pull to within one shot of the lead in the Allianz Championship at West Des Moines, Iowa. First-round leader D.A. Weibring shot a 68 that left him in first place at nine-under 133 in the Champions Tour event.

Boxing

Floyd Mayweather Jr. outboxed and overpowered DeMarcus Corley, winning a unanimous decision at Atlantic City, N.J., in his first fight as a 140-pounder.

Julio Cesar Chavez ended his career with a victory, outpointing old nemesis Frankie Randall in a 10-round welterweight bout at Mexico City.

Chavez, 41, had chosen Randall, 42, as the opponent to cap his career, which would end at 106-5-2 -- if he stays retired.

Jean-Marc Mormeck of France retained his World Boxing Assn. cruiserweight title with a unanimous decision over Virgil Hill of Bismarck, N.D., at Brakpan, South Africa. Hill, 40, said he would retire.

Miscellany

Receiver Dennis Northcutt agreed to terms on a new three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns nearly three months after being denied free agency because his agent missed a filing deadline. Financial terms were not immediately known, but Northcutt had been seeking a deal worth more than $3 million a season. He was scheduled to make about $700,000 a season over the next three years.

Lance Armstrong finished 15th in the fourth stage of the Languedoc-Roussillon cycling race in France, a tuneup for his bid at a sixth consecutive Tour de France title in July.

Armstrong advanced from 44th to ninth place in the overall standings in the field of 90 riders with one stage left. He was 2 minutes 8 seconds behind stage winner Christophe Moreau, who also has the overall lead.

Tenth-seeded Todd Rogers and Sean Scott advanced to their first FIVB Tour beach volleyball semifinal by beating fourth-seeded Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland, 21-16, 21-16, at Lianyungang, China.
