Up for a good run? Head over to the swimming pool

Share

Deep-water running, an activity popular with older Americans and athletes recovering from leg injuries, works well for anyone seeking the aerobic and flexibility benefits of running without the impact and exhaustion. This easy, safe and fun activity uses a torso flotation device and ankle-foot floats to keep your body suspended and head above water, while simulating running in the pool’s deep end. Here are four versions to consider.

*

Comfortable, without pushing it

AquaJogger ProBelt and AquaRunners RX shoes: Conventional foam chest floats and foot floats from the category leader.

Likes: Thick, soft torso float with an elastic waist belt that fits comfortably around your stomach and lower back. Spongy foot floats fit securely around your heel, leaving toes exposed.

Dislikes: An adequate workout for some but may be too easy for people who are very fit. Even with rapid leg movements, it will be difficult to do a serious aerobic workout that will push you into a challenging heart-rate zone. The torso-float design looks dated.

Price: $56.95 (belt), $27.95 (shoes). (800) 922-9544; www.aquajogger.com.

Stylish but not very challenging

Zura Floating Belt and Foot Floats: Torso float with sandal-like foot floats.

Likes: Torso float is similar in many ways to the AquaJogger but has a more a compact and stylish profile. Foot floats -- thick-soled flip-flops with three sport-sandal straps -- provide a running shoe-like feel.

Dislikes: Like the AquaJogger, provides a not-so-challenging workout for fit types.

Price: $39.95 (belt), $23.95 (foot floats). (800) 890-3009; www.zura.com.

More cover for cooler water

Hydro-Fit Wet Vest 2 and Buoyancy & Resistance Cuffs: Torso float that acts like a wetsuit, with ankle-wrap foot floats.

Likes: Neoprene vest keeps you warm in and out of cold water -- like a wetsuit. Good for windy days or night workouts at an outdoor pool. The wider body coverage may be preferable for modest bathers.

Dislikes: Expensive. The flap that holds the vest in place dangles between your legs and was uncomfortable, requiring several adjustments. The vest’s large size made it less convenient to carry, store and dry than the others. Not a very challenging workout for athletes.

Price: $165 (vest), $45 (cuffs). (800) 346-7295; hydrofit.com.

The function of friction

Hydro-Tone Belt and Hydro-Boots: Eye-catching friction boots provide a superior workout.

Likes: These intricate foot-and-ankle boots have a large surface area that provides far more resistance in every direction than other foot floats. Soft, comfortable, double-strap torso float latches securely onto your hips and lower back; coated with slick plastic for durability. Provides a great workout for your leg muscles, especially the hip flexors.

Dislikes: The boots are expensive.

Price: $119 (boots), $49.95 (belt). (800) 622-8663; www.hydrotone.com
