No Driver’s Licenses for the Undocumented

Re “Impasse Feared on Driver’s Licenses,” May 26: Illegal immigrants should not have driver’s licenses! Not because driving without one is dangerous but because a driver’s license will allow the holder to board airliners. At the very least, if licenses are to be given to undocumented aliens, they should carry a very large disclaimer that states that the document cannot be used for identification purposes.

Another reason illegal immigrants should be barred from obtaining a driver’s license is the fact that these are “breeder” documents that can allow the bearer to obtain other documents and privileges that should not be available to those in this country illegally.

Finally, there is no assurance that a potential terrorist, who can cross our borders with ease, can’t claim to be a Mexican and obtain a license, which would allow him or her access to sensitive areas.

Lawmakers are well aware of what would happen if extending driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants were brought to a vote of the legal residents of California, which is why they withdrew the original bill that ultimately cost the Democrats the governorship and absolute control of this state. It is truly an oxymoron to call these individuals -- who support those who are in violation of our immigration laws -- “lawmakers.” What a joke!
