Scientist Turns In Nearly a Pound of Plutonium
A former Russian nuclear physicist turned over 14 ounces of plutonium he had kept in his garage and may face criminal charges, Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Leonid Grigorov said he got no response when he urged authorities to secure the eight containers of dangerous material that he said he had found discarded near a mining factory in Siberia, the agency reported.
He placed the plutonium in a leaden case in his garage and later turned it over to police under a weapons-for-cash offer. He got no money, but police might charge him with illegal possession of radioactive material.
The material was not believed to be weapons-grade.
