Escalating Violence Claims 7 More Lives

Gunmen killed two police officers and five civilians in southern Thailand, and seriously wounded a Buddhist monk, officials said. Escalating violence in the region has left more than 400 people dead this year.
The government blames Islamic separatists in the Muslim-dominated region. Most Thais in the rest of the country are Buddhists, and Muslim leaders complain of discrimination and heavy-handed treatment.
