Party Holds On to Presidency, Parliament
Namibia’s ruling party retained the presidency and its two-thirds majority in Parliament in last week’s elections, officials said.
The South West African People’s Organization won 77% of the vote, giving it 55 of Parliament’s 72 seats. More than 900,000 people registered to vote, and turnout was 95%.
SWAPO’s Hifikepunye Pohamba, handpicked by outgoing President Sam Nujoma, won the presidency. He is expected to continue his mentor’s policy of steady economic growth and push ahead with land reform in a country where the bulk of commercial farmland is held by whites.
