Rather’s Resignation Generates a Debate

Re “Rather to Step Down as CBS News Anchor,” Nov. 24: It seems that Dan Rather has transcended reporting the news, and has himself become the news. Based upon his performance of late, I’d say yesterday’s news.

What has happened to logic? A big deal is made over Dan Rather’s unwittingly using a forged document to make a point about President Bush’s military service, apparently prompting Rather to resign, while Bush and his buddies are reelected after lying shamelessly to launch a war that kills thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of people.

Bill Clinton is impeached for mild fibs about his sexual dalliances while Bush’s cataclysmic lies are either ignored or denied. Has someone slipped a drug into the water supply that eats away at people’s brains?

Call me elitist, but I cannot make myself believe that because those who have been hoodwinked into believing black is white are the majority, they are therefore right. A society that considers what citizens do in the privacy of their own homes sinful and dropping bombs in the middle of cities noble is not a healthy one.

The list of liberals whose careers have crashed after doing battle with George W. Bush continues to grow: Ann Richards, Al Gore, John Kerry, Tom Daschle and now Dan Rather.

Rather says that his best work still lies ahead of him. I certainly hope so.
