Cole’s Photos Tell a Poignant Story

Share

Re the Sept. 28 photo by Carolyn Cole of two children in Darfur, Sudan: What the eyes of Sabir Ali Abdu and his sibling have seen should never be seen by anyone, let alone children.

While they wait for diplomats to dither endlessly over legal definitions and what constitutes genocide, thousands are dying.

The same indifference allowed the genocide in Rwanda.

Sabir deserves a chance at freedom, democracy and liberty but alas, he is black and Sudan has no oil.

Times photographer Cole’s gripping work over the past decade, especially her most recent poignant pictures of unparalleled desolation in Sudan, deserves a special place among the more memorable pieces of her profession’s mentors and colleagues. She typifies the concept of photojournalism at its very best.
