A good way to strengthen and stretch your torso muscles is to begin your workouts with this standing twist. In the beginning, you may find that rotating to one side is easier than rotating to the other side. But by doing this simple move over a period of time, you’ll develop equal strength and flexibility on both sides of your body, leading to better posture and a more supple spine in everyday activities.

1 Stand upright with your right leg slightly in front of your left. Place an equal amount of body weight over each leg. Keep your legs straight and your abdominals pulled in toward your spine. Extend both arms in front of you at chest level.

2 Keep your hips facing forward as you twist to your right. Continue rotating your head, shoulders, chest and rib cage to the right as you bring your right hand to your right shoulder. Keep your elbow lifted and hold this position for a few breaths. On the inhales, stand a little taller; on the exhales, twist a little more deeply, pulling your navel to the spine. Return to the starting position. Change legs and twist to the other side.
