Schools in 6 Storm-Hit Counties Reopen Today
Schools in six of Florida’s counties hardest hit by hurricanes -- Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Polk and St. Lucie -- reopen today, in some cases for the first time in more than a month.
State officials said only two districts -- Escambia and Santa Rosa -- would remain closed this week. Classes are expected to resume next Monday in those districts.
Many state schools suffered heavy damage from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne; damage estimates for St. Lucie and Martin county schools totaled $50 million.
