Kurdish Stowaways Will Get to Apply for Asylum

Italy promised that 13 Kurdish stowaways would get a chance to apply for asylum after reportedly being denied that opportunity when they were discovered on a freighter Oct. 9, the United Nations refugee agency said.
For two weeks, the Turkish Kurds had been stuck in a 10-by- 13-foot cabin with only two beds, waiting to hear their fate, an agency spokeswoman said. They were allowed to leave the boat at the Sicilian port of Augusta and were taken to a police station.
