From Times Wire Reports

Malaysia’s high court cleared the way today for an appeal that could erase newly freed former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s criminal record and allow him back into politics.

Anwar’s attorneys began arguing for a full appeal of a corruption conviction. Clearing Anwar would free him of the five-year ban on released felons seeking office or leading parties.

The ruling came after a separate panel overturned a sodomy conviction, releasing Anwar from six years in prison. He says that both convictions were orchestrated to stop him from challenging then-Premier Mahathir Mohamad in 1998.
