WHEN USC HAS THE BALL

Running back Reggie Bush sent a chill through the defensive-coordinator community by turning three passes from Matt Leinart into touchdowns against Virginia Tech. The shifty, speedy Bush can be just as dangerous rushing. He and Colorado native LenDale White could get plenty of opportunities against a Ram defense that surrendered 255 yards rushing last week against Colorado. Colorado State linebacker Jahmal Hall, free safety Ben Stratton and cornerback Robert Hebert each made at least 10 tackles in that game.

WHEN COLORADO STATE HAS THE BALL

The Rams have averaged more than 176 yards rushing during Coach Sonny Lubick’s 11-plus seasons, but quarterback Justin Holland could spark a change in philosophy after passing for more than 400 yards in the opener. Wide receiver David Anderson caught nine passes for 156 yards and gained 271 all-purpose yards. The last time running back Marcus Houston visited the Coliseum, he was wearing a Colorado uniform and rushed for 150 yards.

KEYS TO USC VICTORY

1. Establish the run: White knows many Colorado State players and would love to run past them on the way to the end zone.

2. Stop Houston: Holland has the arm and accuracy to pile up yards passing. But if the Trojans take away the run, they can create turnovers.

3. Protect Matt Leinart: If the line keeps him out of harm’s way, the quarterback can start building the confidence of his receiving corps.
