200 Hindus Held After Threat to Smash Tomb
Police broke up a mob of Hindu hard-liners who threatened to demolish a 17th century Muslim tomb in western India, arresting about 200 people and beating back others with batons. At least 10 officers and seven activists were injured.
C.G. Kumbhar, the local superintendent of police, said officers prevented the mob from reaching Pratapgarh fort, where Muslim Gen. Afzal Khan was buried after he was killed by Shivaji, who established a small Hindu kingdom in the region in the 17th century.
India is overwhelmingly Hindu, but Muslims make up about 12% of the population.
